Workshop in Cultural Affairs: Susan Dumais, Ph.D.

This week's event will be an opportunity for Susan Dumais, an associate professor of sociology to share her research and stimulate scholarly discussion. The CCA welcomes faculty, staff, practioners, and students from IU and beyond interested in cultural affairs research to attend this workshop.

Bio

Susan A. Dumais is an associate professor of sociology at Lehman College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Her work centers on the areas of culture, education, and inequality, particularly the ways that culture can reinforce or eradicate unequal educational experiences and outcomes. In one current research project, she examines the adult behaviors of first-generation college graduates, focusing on their involvement with the arts and their children’s arts exposure. In another project, she studies the association between mothers’ cultural capital and children’s literacy scores in 29 countries. Her research has appeared in journals such as Poetics, Sociological Inquiry, Research in the Sociology of Education, Sociological Perspectives, Social Science Research, and Sociology of Education, among others.
