Faculty Directors Selected for a Small Network Grant with Creative PEC

By: Rebecca Keough

Thursday, August 28, 2025

BLOOMINGTON, IN. – Faculty directors, Joanna Woronkowicz and Doug Noonan, have been selected for a small network grant at the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (Creative PEC) to lead a network on Research in AI and the Creative Industries.

The first activity of the new research network was a successful inaugural workshop in Rotterdam on June 23–24, 2025, which brought together scholars from around the world to identify shared data needs, ethical considerations, and opportunities for collaboration in this emerging field.

This network convenes global experts to strengthen research and policy at the intersection of AI and the creative industries. Through a series of collaborative activities, the network will develop the infrastructure needed to support this emerging field—including shared data resources, empirical evidence, and frameworks to guide future work. Key outcomes include an open-access wiki and actionable recommendations for advancing research on AI and the creative economy. Running through April 2026, the project aims to ensure AI’s role in the sector is shaped by rigorous, evidence-based inquiry.

About Creative PEC

The Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (Creative PEC) works to support the growth of the UK’s creative industries through the production of independent and authoritative evidence and policy advice. Led by Newcastle University, with the Royal Society of Arts and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Creative PEC comprises a core consortium of Newcastle University, Work Advance, the University of Sussex and the University of Sheffield.

Woronkowicz and Noonan are invited Research Fellows of Creative PEC, as Noonan was the inaugural presenter at Creative PEC's seminar series, speaking on the topic of "psychic income for artists."
