BLOOMINGTON, IN. – The Center for Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the new book, Public by Design, by Landmark Columbus Foundation. The new book features essays from the Faculty Co-Directors’ involvement in the 2023 Exhibit Columbus University Design Research Fellowship Colloquium, in which the CCA partnered with Ball State University and Landmark Columbus Foundation on the exhibit of “Activations in Place”.
Public by Design showcases how art, architecture, and collaboration can transform downtowns into vibrant, equitable, and joyful places by acting as a guide to reimagining public space through community-driven design. Through in-depth essays, project highlights, and reflections from designers, curators, and community members, this book offers practical insights for those working within these fields to shape more inclusive and dynamic public spaces.
Featured essays include, How-to: The Art of Collaboration in which Noonan and Woronkowicz state, “pragmatic community leaders need to worry about getting stuff done, budgets and capacity, and herding cats. University folks – the ones you’ll want to partner with – are just as pragmatic. They just operate in a different world,” and How-to: Collaborate with Artists and Transform Public Space in which they continue by stating, “cities and corporations are hiring artists-in-residence to help infuse innovation into their operations, with the hope of finding solutions to problems and improving the way things get done.” With adaptable ideas and approaches, Public by Design encourages fresh ways to think about public space and its role in everyday life.
